Office Chair Dance Party or My Last Five Music Purchases Part II

The Coup is an Oakland hip hop group who creates amazingly danceable songs with lyrics about societal injustice. I am happily dancing along to lines like “salary cap on a birth certificate”. I get more out of this album everytime I listen to it and if listening to Magic Clap doesn’t immediately put you in a good mood…I’m not sure what to tell you.

Favorite Songs: The Magic Clap, Your Parent’s Cocaine, Violet

Zee Avi’s album is like a soothing balm to my soul. It’s like a beach vacation, a wonderful story read aloud and a calming meditation all in one. Her lovely voice and ukulele playing are perfect for winding down in the evening or enjoying your morning wake up routine.

Thao & the Get Down Stay Down isn’t just a great name, they are a great folk rock band who delights the ears. I first heard Holy Roller on the NPR SXSW mix of artists to know about. I would say one of my favorite attributes in a song is when it starts a little slow and then the tempo rises until you can’t help but feel triumphant while listening to the song. Most of the songs on We the Common have this feeling and will make you feel ready to take on the world or maybe just Monday.

I have played Vampire Weekend's last album, Contra, so many times my iPod probably emailed them and asked them to come out with a new album already. Modern Vampires of the City does not disappoint with its lovely songs. I suppose they are categorized as Indie Rock but I just call it happiness music.

Favorite Songs: Unbelievers, Worship You, Step

When people tell me they don’t like country music, I assume they are referring to the music on a country radio station not the music of Patsy Cline or Johnny Cash. I love a great country song that captures emotions so well you feel completely lost in the story. Kelly Hogan has such an evocative voice and her music is a little bit country, a little folky, a little disco and a little bit rock. It reminds me of some of my favorite ladies: Patsy, Dolly and Linda Rondstadt. This album has poppy fun, songs to cry to and can be listened to over and over.
